The region has been experiencing a heat wave for the past ten days. Temperatures have soared as high as 39 degrees centigrade, and with water shortages in the West Bank life has become intolerable for the residents, especially for those who have been rendered homeless because of evictions and demolitions. We pray for cooler temperatures and mercy in the hearts of the occupiers.  

We give thanks to God for the fruitful 5^th International Young Adult Conference that brought together 27 international and a dozen local participants from 12 countries to ‘come, see and act.’ Let us continue to pray that those who experienced transformation during the trip will encourage more young people to understand the theological, moral and legal aspects of the conflict and stand firm for truth.

The Rev. Naim Ateek will be joining over 60 people from all over the USA at the 2010 FOSNA Leadership Retreat that will be held in Portland, Oregon next week. We pray that the participants will find new and creative ways to work for a just peace.

As the world eagerly awaits direct negotiations to be resumed between Israelis and Palestinians in the coming weeks, the facts on the ground in Jerusalem alone reveal their futility. On Monday, the evicted families of Hannoun and Ghawi in the Sheikh Jarrah area marked one full year living in the street. Home demolitions in various parts of the city have continued and settlement construction has not ceased. How long O Lord? Listen to the cry of your children.

Aujourd’hui, des ONG et des membres de la société civile de Jérusalem, vont lancer la Campagne Internationale contre la Révocation des Droits de Résidence des Palestiniens de Jérusalem. Nous espérons que cette campagne va faire davantage prendre conscience des conditions de vie menacées à Jérusalem et qu’elle va inciter les décideurs mondiaux à oser prendre position pour remédier aux injustices commises contre les Palestiniens.

La Troisième Conférence de Sabeel pour les Femmes de la Région qui va se tenir à Bethléem les 26, 27 et 28 août rassemblera des centaines de participantes de Jérusalem, de Cisjordanie et de Galilée qui, ensemble en ce “Moment de Vérité”, vont bravement relever les défis qu’elles doivent affronter et envisager comment opérer activement une transformation et des changements dans leurs communautés. Prions avec constance pour que les participantes, les intervenants et les organisateurs trouvent des façons de surmonter les manques aux plans spirituel, social et politique lorsqu’il apprennent à vivre dans la tolérance et l’amour.

L’élection de l’évêque luthérien palestinien Munib Younan à la présidence de la Fédération Luthérienne Mondiale pour les sept prochaines années constitue un signe positif de l’engagement pour la paix, au moins au sein des 145 Églises membres dans 79 pays du monde entier. Prions pour que l’évêque Younan, avec le soutien de tous ceux qui luttent pour une paix juste, puisse contribuer à construire la paix au Moyen Orient.

En écho aux prières de l’évêque Mounib Younan afin que “les Chrétiens palestiniens ne perdent pas confiance et ne quittent pas le pays”, des membres du clergé de Galilée et de Jérusalem, avec leur sépouses, ont rendu visite à leurs frères de Jenin, Birqin et d’autres petits hameaux de Cisjordanie en témoignage de solidarité et de soutien. Prions pour que les “croyants oubliés” dont les racines sont profondes, confortés par l’encouragement spirituel de leurs visiteurs, continuent à témoigner et à demeurer fermes faces à des conditions de plus en plus difficiles susceptibles de déshumaniser les gens.

Today, Jerusalem NGOs and Members of the Civil Society will launch The International Campaign against Revoking the Residency Rights of Palestinians from Jerusalem.  We hope that this campaign will bring further awareness about the threatening conditions in Jerusalem, and they will urge global decision-makers to dare speak out and rectify the injustices committed against the Palestinians.

The Third Sabeel Local Women’s Conference that will be held in Bethlehem on August 26, 27 and 28, 2010 will gather hundreds of participants from Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Galilee, who, together in this “Moment of Truth”, will bravely meet the challenges facing them, and strategize to actively bring transformation and change in their communities. Let us constantly pray for the participants, speakers and organizers to find ways of bridging the spiritual, social and political gaps as they learn to live in tolerance and love.

The election of Palestinian Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan as President of   the Lutheran World Federation for the coming seven years heralds positive signs of commitment for peace, at least among the 145 member churches in 79 countries around the world. We pray that Bishop Younan, with the support of all who strive for a just peace, will be able to contribute to building peace in the Middle East.

Echoing Bishop Munib Younan’s prayers that “ Palestinian Christians may not lose faith and leave the country”,  Sabeel Clergy and spouses from the Galilee and Jerusalem visited their brethren in Jenin, Birqin and other small hamlets in the West Bank in a gesture of solidarity and support. We pray that the deeply rooted “forgotten faithful”, empowered by the spiritual encouragement of the visitors, will continue to witness and stand steadfast amidst the increasing difficult conditions that can dehumanize people.

40 jeunes venus de 12 pays ont prié dans l’Église de Toutes les Nations à Gethsémani pour ouvrir la 5^ème Conférence Internationale des Jeunes Adultes. Ils vont rencontrer des gens du pays, s’engager dans un travail bénévole et s’informer de ce qu’est la vie ici actuellement. Prions pour leur disponibilité à apprendre et pour qu’ils puissent établir des relations positives et durables.

Rendons grâce pour tous ceux qui vont avoir l’opportunité de reprendre des forces physiques et spirituelles au cours de ces semaines. Prions aussi pour ceux qui en Cisjordanie et à Gaza n’ont aucune possibilité de partir à cause de l’emprisonnement du peuple palestinien sous le régime d’occupation israélien.

Jérusalem n’en fait pas de publicité, mais les Nations Unies ont noté un accroissement des démolitions dans la vallée du Jourdain. Au début de cette semaine, Israël a commencé à supprimer plus de 20 bâtiments de fermes et des tentes dans le secteur d’Al-Farisiya, dans le but de développer des avant-postes de colonisation dans le nord de la vallée du Jourdain. Entends notre prière, o Dieu, pour les familles et les communautés affectées par ces démolitions.

La Olympia Food Co-Op de la ville où habitait Rachel Corrie dans l’état de Washington aux USA a décidé récemment de boycotter les produits israéliens pour protester contre la poursuite de l’occupation israélienne. Rendons grâce pour les actions courageuses de groupes guidés par des valeurs et pour lesquels les obligations morales surpassent les préoccupations financières.

Cette semaine, nous nous associons à la prière du Conseil Œcuménique des Églises pour le Bélize, le Guatémala, le Honduras et le Mexique.

40 youth from 12 countries worshipped in the church of All Nations at Gethsemane to open Sabeel’s 5^th International Young Adult Conference. They will meet with local people, undertake volunteer work and learn about life today in this place. We pray for their openness to learn and that they may build positive and long lasting relationships.

The summer holiday season is here. We give thanks for all who will have a chance to refresh body and soul in these weeks. We pray also for those in the West Bank and Gaza who have no chance to get away because of the imprisonment of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation regime.

It does not receive the publicity of Jerusalem, but the UN has noted an increase in demolitions in the Jordan valley. Earlier this week, Israel began removing over 20 farm buildings and tents in the Al-Farisiya area, aimed at expanding settlement outposts in the northern Jordan Valley. Hear our prayer, O God, for the families and communities affected by these demolitions.

The Olympia Food Co-Op in the home town of Rachel Corrie in Washington State, USA recently decided to boycott Israel products in protest against the continuing Israeli occupation. We give thanks for courageous moves by principled groups who see the moral imperative that goes beyond financial concern.

Rendons grâce pour le développement en Cisjordanie et à Jérusalem du mouvement de résistance non violente qui est un défi permanent à l’occupation israélienne. Il doit  aussi faire face à des comportements de plus en plus violents de la police et de l’armée. Vendredi dernier à Sheikh-Jarrah, les forces de sécurité ont donné des coups de pied aux protestataires et les ont frappés, y compris un ancien procureur général israélien. Prions pour la sécurité et le bien-être de tous ceux qui contestent courageusement l’occupation par des méthodes non violentes.

Au cours des deux prochaines semaines, quarante jeunes adultes de Palestine et du monde vont se rassembler à Jérusalem pour participer à la quatrième conférence annuelle de Sabeel à l’intention des jeunes adultes : “Du ventre de la baleine, un appel chrétien palestinien pour la justice.” Puisse leur temps de pèlerinage et d’information les inciter à rechercher la paix dans la justice en Palestinie et en Israël et dans tous les conflits où qu’ils se déroulent dans le monde.

De plus en plus d’Églises sont en train de comprendre qu’il est nécessaire de voir la justice appliquée à la situation d’ici avant que nous puissions progresser vers la paix et la réconciliation. D’importantes critiques sont faites maintenant à l’encontre de la politique d’Israël et la pression s’accroit sur les autorités sociales et politiques. Rendons grâce pour ces vents de changement dans le monde et prions afin d’obtenir l’énergie, l’enthousiasme et l’imagination pour tous les mouvements et toutes les personnes qui oeuvrent pour la liberté du peuple palestinien.

Ahlan wa Sahlan est la formule de bienvenue traditionnelle ici. Et elle est adressée de tout cœur à tous ceux qui viennent nous rendre visite. AU cours de la première moitié de l’année, plus de 1000 personnes ont rendu visite à Sabeel pour s’informer de son ministère et prendre conscience de ce que cela signifie pour un Palestinien de vivre sous l’occupation. Nous rendons grâce pour cet engagement et nous demandons de prier pour la visite de témoignage de Sabeel que nous préparons pour octobre 2010 et pour notre recherche de personnes intéressées à y participer.

We give thanks for the growing movement of non-violent resistance in the West Bank and Jerusalem which is constantly challenging the Israeli occupation. It is also meeting increasingly violent tactics from the police and military forces. Last Friday in Sheikh Jarrah security forces kicked and hit protestors, including a former Israeli Attorney General. We pray for the safety and wellbeing of all who courageously challenge the occupation with non-violent tactics.

In the coming two weeks, forty young adults from Palestine and around the world will gather in Jerusalem to participate in the fifth annual Sabeel international Young Adult Conference: "From the Belly of the Whale: A Palestinian Christian Cry for Justice." May their time of pilgrimage and learning inspire them to pursue peace with justice in Palestine and Israel and in all conflicts wherever they may be in the world.

More and more churches are understanding that it is necessary to see justice applied to the situation here before we can progress to peace and reconciliation. There is substantial criticism now being made of the policies of Israel and pressure is mounting on the social and political leadership. We give thanks for these winds of change around the world and pray for energy, enthusiasm and imagination for all the movements and individuals who devote themselves to freedom for the Palestinian people.

Ahlan wa Sahlan is the traditional welcoming greeting here. And it is heartily meant to all who come and visit. In the first half of the year over 1000 people have visited Sabeel to hear about this ministry and what it means to live as a Palestinian under occupation. We give thanks for this interest and ask for prayers as we prepare for and seek interested people to participate in the Sabeel Witness Visit in October 2010 and the eighth international conference in February 2011.
