God of grace, we lift our gratitude for Sweden’s announcement that it intends to recognize the state of Palestine. Currently 138 countries, representing over 80 percent of the world’s population, recognize the state of Palestine and its right to self-determination. Lord, last week Israel announced its plan to move forward with the construction of 2,610 new housing units in an illegal Jewish settlement in Beit Safafa in East Jerusalem. If this plan is implemented, it would further isolate East Jerusalem from Bethlehem, continuing to fragment what is left of historic Palestine, and making a future two-state solution even more difficult to achieve. As country representatives travel to Egypt later this week for an international donors’ conference on reconstructing the Gaza Strip, we raise our concerns to you about the ongoing suffering in Gaza. So many people are unable to rebuild their homes due to Israel’s chronic blockade and its serious restrictions on the import of building materials into Gaza so urgently needed for massive reconstruction.
